About the Department

General Overview

The Department of Chemistry offers graduate programmes leading to the degrees of Masters of Science (M.sc), Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) and Doctor of Philosophy with emphasis on any of the traditional areas of chemistry namely; Physical, Organic, Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry.

The Department of Chemistry was one of the foundation departments in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences in 1964.  It offered the B. Sc Honours Degree in Chemistry, graduating its first set of students in 1967.  The Department has grown in size since inception and has enjoyed the continued presence in the department of vibrant members of staff with strong academic backgrounds. The merger of the Science Division of the College and Technology, Abeokuta (COSTAB), the University of Lagos (Abeokuta Campus) with the Akoka Campus introduced the erstwhile Petroleum Chemistry/Petrochemicals and Industrial Chemistry programmes of COSTAB into the programmes of the Department. In 1984 the department graduated its first set of graduates in Industrial Chemistry.    In the same year, the one year- M.Sc. Program by coursework was introduced.  In 2000 M. Sc and Ph.D. programs in Analytical and Environmental Chemistry were introduced.  The postgraduate Diploma and Masters in Environmental Management were also introduced in the same year.
