Personal Statement

Dr. Edesiri Bridget Nkemnole (nee Ahani) is an Associate Professor and current Acting Head of Department in the Department of Statistics, Faculty of Physical and Earth Sciences, University of Lagos. She has B.Sc. (Ed) Mathematics (Second Class Upper division) from Delta State University (DELSU), Master degree (MSc) Statistics and Doctoral degree (PhD) Statistics both from the University of Lagos.

Dr. Nkemnole has both teaching and research experience with an excellent record in teaching, research and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Her research interest is in Mathematical and Computational Statistics, Stochastic Processes – Markov chains / Hidden Markov Chain and Time Series Analysis. Some of her research activities involve developing stochastic models for solving diverse real-life problems.

Her research works has been presented in both local and international conferences some of which include: The Nigerian Mathematical Society (NMS, Nigeria), Nigerian Statistical Association (NSA) now Chartered Institute of Statisticians of Nigeria (CISSON), Professional Statisticians Society of Nigeria (PSSN) and Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM, USA) under the University of Lagos Learned Conference Grant (UNILAG). She has published several research papers in both local and international Journals and also a research reviewer and editor for different Journals.

Dr. Nkemnole is a founding member of Mathematical Analysis and Optimization Research Group (MANORG, UNILAG) and Mathematical Analysis and Applications Research Group (MAARG. UNILAG). She is also a member of professional bodies, such as Nigerian Statistical Association (NSA), American Statistical Association (ASA), PSSN, International Association for Official Statistics (IAOS), Association of Mathematical Sciences Optimization (AMSO) and Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD).

Professor Obashoro-John is a prolific scholar and public intellectual whose works include the books Caring for Older Persons (2007), Successful Retirement (2016), and her University of Lagos Inaugural Lecture, Programme Evaluation: Back to the Future (2013). Her international scholarship includes a co-authored chapter with Professor Brian Findsen of the University of Waikato, New Zealand, addressing lifelong learning for older adults, published in Adult Education and Social Justice: International Perspectives (Firenze University Press, 2023). She has also co-authored peer-reviewed articles in public health and community education. A sought-after speaker and facilitator, she has consistently championed the view that retirement represents an opportunity for renewal and purposeful living, describing it as “freedom into freedom.”
