Dr. Geraldine Chibuzor Anukwu
Department of Geosciences
Personal Statement
Dr. Geraldine Chibuzor Anukwu is a Lecturer in the Department of Geosciences, University of Lagos, with over 15 years of academic and research experience spanning Olabisi Onabanjo University, Universiti Sains Malaysia, and the University of Lagos. She also serves as Program Coordinator at the Institute of Maritime Studies, University of Lagos.
Her research focuses on near-surface geophysics and earth imaging, with applications in groundwater exploration, mineral and hydrocarbon investigations, seismic hazard assessment, and engineering site characterization. She employs methods such as MASW, HVSR, electrical resistivity imaging, and Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR), with much of her work addressing practical geophysical challenges in southwestern Nigeria.
She has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and presented her research at local and international conferences. Dr. Anukwu is a recipient of several grants and awards, including the ASUU Research Grant, the OWSD recognition award, and honors from the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG). She is an active member of SEG, NMGS, NAPE, NAEGE, OWSD, and ESReG.
A dedicated educator, she actively mentors and supervises undergraduate and postgraduate students, contributing meaningfully to the growth of geoscience education in Nigeria. Professor Obashoro-John is a prolific scholar and public intellectual whose works include the books Caring for Older Persons (2007), Successful Retirement (2016), and her University of Lagos Inaugural Lecture, Programme Evaluation: Back to the Future (2013). Her international scholarship includes a co-authored chapter with Professor Brian Findsen of the University of Waikato, New Zealand, addressing lifelong learning for older adults, published in Adult Education and Social Justice: International Perspectives (Firenze University Press, 2023). She has also co-authored peer-reviewed articles in public health and community education. A sought-after speaker and facilitator, she has consistently championed the view that retirement represents an opportunity for renewal and purposeful living, describing it as “freedom into freedom.” |
