Dr. Eno Emmanuella E. Akarawak

Personal Statement

Dr Akarawak is an Associate Professor and a researcher with a keen interest in Biostatistics, where I have applied robust statistical methods to develop predictive models for infectious diseases. I am motivated by the way real world health data can be processed to reveal evidence based insights that can improve clinical decision-making, influence public health policy, and save lives. My projects have involves developing robust models for malaria and dengue fever using dynamical and mixed-effects models and machine learning tools to understand factors that aid the spread of malaria and dengue fever and advance effective control strategies. I am particularly interested in causal inference, general and generalized linear models, AI and machine learning and their applications in health and disease modelling, and I hope to contribute to advancements in this area. My current research is focused on developing enhanced and robust epidemic models with the aim to control Malaria spread nationally and across borders. I am committed to mentoring and training upcoming Biostatisticians with robust and innovative statistical and computing tools to enhance their competence in modelling epidemiology data and managing infectious disease outbreaks. I am open to collaborations in the area of malaria and dengue fever research and training and in developing sustainable strategies towards achieving a malaria-free Nigeria.

Professor Obashoro-John is a prolific scholar and public intellectual whose works include the books Caring for Older Persons (2007), Successful Retirement (2016), and her University of Lagos Inaugural Lecture, Programme Evaluation: Back to the Future (2013). Her international scholarship includes a co-authored chapter with Professor Brian Findsen of the University of Waikato, New Zealand, addressing lifelong learning for older adults, published in Adult Education and Social Justice: International Perspectives (Firenze University Press, 2023). She has also co-authored peer-reviewed articles in public health and community education. A sought-after speaker and facilitator, she has consistently championed the view that retirement represents an opportunity for renewal and purposeful living, describing it as “freedom into freedom.”
