Our mission is to train students to acquire comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in Statistics, Biostatistics, and Data Science to the highest attainable level. We aim to produce graduates with unmatched competencies in data collection, analysis, interpretation, and application across scientific, health, and industrial sectors. Through rigorous academic and ethical training, we seek to imbue society with discipline, analytical thinking, and positive values — the essential ingredients that propel and sustain national and global development.
The Statistics Department
The Department of Statistics, Faculty of Physical and Earth Science, University of Lagos, is one of the pioneering departments dedicated to advancing the teaching, research, and application of statistical science in Nigeria. Since its establishment, the Department has continued to provide a strong foundation in statistical theory, methodology, and modern data analysis techniques.
The Department offers three degree programmes: B.Sc. Statistics, B.Sc. Biostatistics, and B.Sc. Data Science. Each programme is designed to equip students with analytical, computational, and problem-solving skills required to meet the growing demand for data-driven decision-making across sectors such as health, finance, environment, industry, and technology.
Our curriculum blends theoretical depth with practical exposure, using modern statistical software and data tools. Students are trained not only to analyze data but also to interpret and communicate insights effectively — a key competence in the digital and information age.
