Dr. Juliet Ugbede Akoh

Department of Geosciences

Personal Statement

Dr Juliet Ugbede Akoh has been a lecturer in the Department of Geosciences at the University of Lagos since 2015. She earned her undergraduate degree in 2004 from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi. Her final-year research project was on the trace elements study and the environmental implications of gold mining in the Birni Gwari area, Kaduna State. The project showed the environmental and health impacts of illegal mining in the study area.

She completed her Master of Science in Geology in 2014 from the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Her M.Sc. research provided detailed petrographic, mineralogical, and geochemical analyses of the Kokona pegmatite Nasarawa state, as well as its mineralisation potential, by examining trends in Li, Be, Sn, Zn, F, Ta, and Nb within the pegmatite.

Juliet U. Akoh earned her PhD from the University of Johannesburg, South Africa in 2024. Her thesis, titled “Mineralogy, Geochemistry, and Isotope Geology of the Pilanesberg Complex and Associated dykes” focused particularly on the complex magmatic and hydrothermal evolution of the highly peralkaline rock suites (syenite and nepheline syenite/phonolite rocks) in the Pilanesberg Complex, South Africa. Her work provided detailed field, petrological, mineralogical, and geochemical interpretation of the Pilanesberg Complex rocks.

Professor Obashoro-John is a prolific scholar and public intellectual whose works include the books Caring for Older Persons (2007), Successful Retirement (2016), and her University of Lagos Inaugural Lecture, Programme Evaluation: Back to the Future (2013). Her international scholarship includes a co-authored chapter with Professor Brian Findsen of the University of Waikato, New Zealand, addressing lifelong learning for older adults, published in Adult Education and Social Justice: International Perspectives (Firenze University Press, 2023). She has also co-authored peer-reviewed articles in public health and community education. A sought-after speaker and facilitator, she has consistently championed the view that retirement represents an opportunity for renewal and purposeful living, describing it as “freedom into freedom.”
