Department of
GEOSCIENCES
Welcome to the Department of Geosciences
You are welcome to Department of Geosciences which offers both Geology and Geophysics.
It is one of the departments under Faculty of Physical and Earth Sciences, University of Lagos. It has nineteen (19) Academic Staff (Geology and Geophysics), three (3) Technical Staff and three (3) Administrative Staff.
The students both at undergraduate and post graduate levels are over seven hundred. There is a building located at the old Faculty of Science that is about completion donated by NNPC-SNEPCO to the Department tagged ‘Geosciences Centre of Excellence’ which is to house staff of the Department of Geosciences when completed. The elegant building is the cynosure of all eyes at the University of First Choice and the Nation’s Pride, UNILAG.
The Academic Staff are well exposed nationally and globally. Our students are highly rated based on sound academic training and unparalleled practical exposures in both Geology and Geophysics received from our seasoned lecturers.
Our students are in most cases coming first in the technical completions nationally and globally. The Department has received many equipment, software and technical supports worth several billions of naira from Oil and Gas industry like SHELL, NNPC, Schlumberger, Baker Hughe, Harvex Geosolution, Chevron, TotalEnergies, etc.
The Department has over years established a synergy between Gown and Town.
Geosciences Department has produced several renowned academia and successful captains of the industries within and outside the country.
In view of the foregoing, it is a place to be for both students staff and researchers who are willing to add national and global values.
Prof. Lukumon Adeoti
Head of Department (HOD)
Our Vision
To be the best and most sought-after Department of Geosciences in Africa
Our Mission
To produce world-class Geoscientists of contemporary relevance
The Geosciences Department
You are welcome to the Department of Geosciences where two programmes: Geology and Geophysics are offered as full time at BSc, MSc, MPhil and PhD levels. The Department equally offers part-time programmes in PGD and Masters of Applied Geophysics.
The courses in Geosciences are designed to provide both scientific training and professional competency necessary for graduates to satisfy the various needs of their chosen field and also provide manpower requirements for the academia, research institutes and observatories as well as the industry. Students are also exposed to certain courses from which they can graduate to full self-employment in resources exploration and related fields.
In this department, training and research in the application of geological and geophysical techniques to solve environmental challenges and the development of natural resources are given a high priority. The programme is designed to provide in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge on the wider subject of geology and geophysics, impacting the skills that will allow the application of this knowledge to identify and solve problems in the important areas of oil exploration, mining, environmental and geotechnical studies.
Furthermore, the department effectively utilizes the unique advantage of industrial exposure and training in various areas of geosciences, especially in the oil and gas industry available to her.
Core values
Our core aim is to produce graduates that can occupy leadership positions in the oil and gas, mining, engineering, water resources management, environmental related companies, academia, research and governmental organizations, and other related areas.
Objectives of the Programme
Our objectives are to train students that:
- Can contribute positively to the economic development of the nation and the world at large.
- Can recognize the physical processes governing the behaviour of common geological and geophysical systems.
- Can be able to explain the principles of applying geological and geophysical methods to societal relevant problems, including natural hazards, resources exploration and management, and environmental issues.
- Can make their own observations with a variety of geophysical and geological instruments, and deduce models, and interpret their data and uncertainties.
- Can effectively communicate their scientific knowledge through written and oral presentations.
Programmes
Take a significant step in your career journey by investing in your professional development through our faculty’s specialized certificate programs, designed to provide you with in-depth knowledge and practical skills in a focused area of study.
